NANAIMO — Following a two-year pandemic-related hiatus, live and in-person Canada Day events are back.

Maffeo Sutton Park will be the main site for festivities in Nanaimo, with events happening from 11:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on July 1. The main stage will host multiple live musical performances, and a cultural community stage featuring a variety of local dance performers.

Food trucks, bouncy castles and plenty of other activities will keep everybody entertained throughout the day.

No vehicle parking will be available on-site, but there will be a free bike valet parking service available from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., along with free shuttle services from Woodgrove Centre and VIU.

Parksville fireworks
Canada Day events in the Oceanside area will cap off with a bang at Parksville Community Park. The fun starts with a pancake breakfast at 7:30 a.m, followed by a parade at 10 a.m. and entertainment getting underway in the early afternoon.

In past years, the parade has attracted an onsite audience of around 25,000 people.

Food trucks, a market and a festival-like atmosphere for families and kids will be on hand.

The ever-popular annual Canada Day fireworks display at the Community Park, put on by a private business, starts at 10:15 p.m.

Motorists are reminded to expect considerable delays in the area, while limited parking throughout Parksville’s downtown core is expected.

Ladysmith celebrates Canada Day
The Town of Ladysmith is bringing back its regular, pre-pandemic family-friendly events at Transfer Beach Park.

Ladysmith’s Canada Day festivities start with a pancake breakfast between 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. hosted by their local Kinsmen Club, with the official ceremony starting at 11:00 a.m. at the amphitheatre.

There is also a scavenger hunt taking place all day long through the town.
