Nanaimo Sports and Social Club gears up for active summer season

NANAIMO — Competition and camaraderie are on the menu this summer for the Nanaimo Sports and Social Club.

The club provides recreation opportunities and fellowship for adults with a number of different activities being offered.

Co-organizer Chuck Hocker said California kickball is already underway with dodgeball and grass volleyball beginning soon.

“Myself and Jamie Kuhn started it in 2018 with the idea of getting adults to connect through playing sports that were maybe less conventionally offered throughout the city.”

There were challenges in terms of what could be offered in 2020 and 2021 because of COVID-19 restrictions but 2022 has brought a sense of normalcy and appreciation for the unique sporting events the club puts on.

“We’ve had a lot of feedback from players how excited and grateful they are that they’ve had this opportunity to head back out and meet up with friends, do activities and have that thing they look forward to throughout the work week that gets them through.”

Since day one dodgeball has been the most popular sport.

Hocker said it appeals to the widest demographic and level of athletic ability.

“We run it for most of the year. It has the largest number of teams and participants. I would say volleyball and California kickball are neck and neck for number two.”

Other offerings throughout the year include spike ball, soccer and ultimate frisbee.

Getting together after the games are done is a huge part of the experience that had been missing for two years.

Hocker said the social aspect has been increasing as people’s comfort levels rise.

“Now most players seem comfortable intermingling with their teammates and the other team. There’s a lot more talk about going out afterward for food or meeting up with other teams someplace.”

Information on the sports and dates for everything the Nanaimo Sports and Social Club offers is available on their website or on social media through their Facebook and Instagram feeds.
