NANAIMO — Lights, camera, and action in a park near you.

Following a two-year shift to a drive-in format, the Sunset Cinema series events put on by Coastal Community Credit Unions are returning to a more familiar lawn chair and blanket affair.

Nanaimo will host a screening of Encanto at Maffeo Sutton Park on Friday, July 15 while Parksville Community Park will screen Sing 2 the following night.

“The drive-ins were a great option for us through COVID and kept everyone safe but we are very, very excited to be back to people…sitting on the grass, having the music playing,” Allyson Prescesky, community manager for Coastal Community Credit Unions, told NanaimoNewsNOW.

Movies begin after dark and are free to attend.

Prescesky said there is no reserved seating or tickets to grab beforehand, but a lot of people get to the park early to pick out the best spot and enjoy an evening outside.

“The screen is three storeys tall, so it’s a very large screen and there’s not a bad seat in the house.”

Other events are being held in Duncan, Port Alberni, Courtenay and Campbell River between July 14 and July 19.

Proceeds from concession sales go to support the Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island. Staff from the Credit Unions in each community will be operating the concession.

“The regular movie snacks so pops, popcorn, cotton candy and all the good stuff and we can’t thank our employees enough for volunteering their time and helping out a good cause.”

Last year’s drive-in events raised around $10,000.

More information on the Sunset Cinema series is available on the Credit Union’s website.
