NANAIMO — Local Mounties confirmed the identity of a man following the recovery of a body due to a suspected drowning in mid-April.

Nanaimo RCMP report a body was recovered during a search on May 3, with a formal identification in the weeks since confirming it was 59-year-old Kent Schroeder.

Schroeder was on board a boat in waters between Nanaimo and Protection Island when he went overboard around 8:40 p.m. on April 11.

A woman also on board was rescued by first responders in an extremely hypothermic state, according to police.

Emergency crews conducted a massive search the same evening, continuing into the following days on the assumption Schroeder had drowned, however were unable to recover his body.

Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW in April there was no evidence to suggest anything criminal occurred, however police are asking any witnesses to the incident to contact them.
