Police trying to identify person of interest after recent suspicious fires

NANAIMO — Police have released the picture of an individual described as a person of interest in connection to recent intentionally set fires in Harewood.

On Sunday, April 3 just after 7 a.m. fire crews responded a garden shed fire on the grounds of John Barsby Secondary School.

RCMP noted the shed was destroyed, while a person was seen near the scene when the fire was beginning to smoulder, before riding off on a scooter.

About three hours later RCMP stated a fire started under a pedestrian bridge meters away from the garden shed fire.

Crews extinguished the fire, who determined it appeared wood was buried under the bridge then set on fire.

A picture of a person seen walking away from the second fire was taken, which police noted matched a description from the first fire.

“The person of interest is described as a Caucasian man, slim build with long brown hair, and wearing a blue ski jacket, and track pants with a white stripe along the side. Of note, he had a white scooter with him,” RCMP Res. Cst. Gary O’Brien stated in a news release.

On Saturday April 9, a seat cover melted on the back porch of a home in the 700 block of Stirling Ave. from an intentionally set fire, however police can’t connect it to the other two incidents.
