NANAIMO — Two people and their dogs were left seriously injured following a suspected hit and run in Lantzville.

Local police report a couple, Geoff and June, were walking on Lorenzen Lane, off the end of Superior Rd. around 3:20 p.m. on Friday, March 4. The couple, their last names are being withheld, were with their two dogs and said they were hit by a black SUV.

Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW the two were walking on a shoulder of the road, facing oncoming traffic. The two dogs were on a short leash when they were hit.

“Unbeknownst to them, a vehicle comes from behind and actually crossed over into their lane and struck June in the back. The force drove her into her husband Geoff and all four of them fell into the ditch.”

June sustained significant, but non-life threatening injuries while Geoff received soft tissue bruising. One of their dogs required surgery to fix an injured leg while the other was left bruised.

“June still has very limited memory of the incident, Geoff managed to crawl himself out of the ditch and saw the black SUV basically idling about 25 metres away,” O’Brien added. “He yelled and screamed at the driver then the car took off, last seen driving onto Superior Rd.”

The primary focus for officers is identifying who was behind the wheel and the circumstances of the incident.

Police are looking for a newer model, black SUV which was possibly electric as neither Geoff or June heard a vehicle prior to impact.

The vehicle will have significant damage to the driver’s side headline and turn signals, as police recovered a piece of it on scene.

O’Brien addressed the month-long delay in making this file public, stating work has gone on behind the scenes to identify the driver responsible.

“We’re at that point in the investigation where we can’t move forward without the assistance of the public.”
