NANAIMO — An English style pub experience home to a range of tastes has become an institution in Nanaimo’s Old City Quarter neighbourhood.

Milton Street Public House has operated under the watchful eye of owner/operator Robert Wilkinson for the past seven years, offering pub favourites and an ever-changing list of feature dishes.

One of those features is an eye and taste appealing Asian inspired tuna and scallop dish.

It includes seared yellow fin tuna complemented by a crusted chilli spice mix, paired with scallops on a bed of greens with avocado.

A sweet and sour sauce and a ginger wasabi lime sauce add a notable punch of flavour. Dried lime, peppercress, celery, roasted cocktail tomatoes and charred green onion round out the meal.

The tuna and scallops dish is a favourite for Wilkinson to prepare, who has a passion for Japanese cuisine.

“I look to pick nice ingredients…we keep everything fresh, we short prep everything here so it’s being made almost every day,’ Wilkinson said.

Feature menu items are often tied to fresh ingredients Wilkinson sources locally.

He said his customers seem to appreciate an evolving list of feature many items.

“I run features everyday, sometimes there’s a few or just one, sometimes it’s street food or a little elevated,” Wilkinson said.

Milton Street Public House offers a full menu of appies, main dishes desserts and drinks, balancing between street-style food and more formal dishes.

Pub favourites like chicken wings, fries and calamari are included among the offerings of appetizers. Main menu choices include a mix of sandwiches, salads, Italian dishes and the highly popular Milton Burger.

Customers continually rave about the Bistro Chicken Dinner.

Born in England, raised in Denmark and living in Canada for many years, Wilkinson said he has been involved in the restaurant industry for a while.

He takes pride in studying menus and cooking techniques from around the world, while also absorbing knowledge from people he’s worked with throughout his career.

Wilkinson said he’s been surprised by wild range of clientele they’ve built up over the years. He said some customers show up multiple times every week.

“The demographic here is everybody…It’s lawyers and accountants, doctors and hipsters. I never expected this place to end up like that.”

Milton Street Public House provides a heritage, intimate feel, which is well suited for a casual night out or an outing a bit more formal.

Wilkinson said there are plans to upgrade and re-open their patio.
