Oysters harvested in Deep Bay recalled, multiple illnesses reported

QUALICUM BEACH — Oysters produced north of Qualicum Beach appear to be making people sick, triggering a recall from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

Affected Stellar Bay Shellfish brand of Chef Creek Oysters harvested and processed in Deep Bay on March 7 have been recalled, according to a CFIA online alert published March 23.

The oysters have been linked to several cases of norovirus-like illnesses, ranging from diarrhea and vomiting to fever, headaches and chills.

“People who are ill should drink plenty of liquids to replace lost body fluids and prevent dehydration. In severe cases, patients may need to be hospitalized and given fluids intravenously,” the CFIA stated.

The recalled farm raised products have been sold in B.C. and may have been distributed elsewhere in Canada, according to the CFIA.

Affected products are being removed from the marketplace, which includes hotels and restaurants, the alert stated.

An investigation could result in further recalls for “other high-risk products” the CFIA stated.
