NANAIMO — The Clippers downed host Alberni Valley 4-2, handing the Bulldogs only their fourth regulation home loss of the season.

Nanaimo was responsible for two of those losses and won the seven game season series 5-2.

Jeremie Payant got the Clippers off to a fast start with a goal two minutes into the contest but Nanaimo trailed 2-1 after the first period of a contest Sunday night at Weyerhauser Arena.

From there Nanaimo chipped away with a short handed goal by Jake Hewitt midway through the middle frame, a power play marker from Sean Donaldson late in regulation time and an empty netter by Brody Waters in the final minute.

Cooper Black stood tall making 33 saves and besting Bulldogs starter Hobie Hedquist.

The final shots were 35-18 in Alberni’s favour.

Special teams were critical for the Clippers going 1/3 on the man advantage and 4/4 killing penalties.

Nanaimo still has a chance to overtake the Bulldogs for first place in the Coastal Division with four games to play.

The Clippers will host Victoria on Wednesday, March 16 and on March 25, while Nanaimo visits Cowichan Valley on Saturday, March 19 and host Coquitlam the following evening.
