Woman pleads guilty to Nanaimo road rage incidents and evading arrest

NANAIMO — An upcoming sentencing hearing is expected to explain dangerous and perplexing actions of a woman, including the assault of a 66-year-old fellow motorist on the Nanaimo Parkway.

Amanda Arlene Jones, 39, pleaded guilty last week to assault, dangerous operation of a vehicle and resisting or obstructing a peace officer, following what police called “several bizarre incidents” on Aug. 1, 2020.

Nanaimo RCMP alleged Jones was driving a grey Mitsubishi in the southbound lanes of the Nanaimo Parkway near Aulds Rd. when she stopped and approached the motorist who stopped behind her.

Following a short dialogue, the victim was punched multiple times in the head, resulting in numerous cuts and bruises to her hands and head, according to police.

RCMP then received a report a vehicle matching the description of Jones’ was seen travelling into oncoming traffic at the intersection of Jingle Pot Rd. and Calder Rd. directly toward a pedestrian.

The pedestrian was not hit.

Additional calls to Nanaimo Mounties came in about an erratic woman at Westwood Lake Park sitting in a lifeguard tower.

Officers reported being sprayed by the woman with a liquid, which she claimed would hurt them, however the substance was believed to be water.

The suspect escaped the grasp of police temporarily, but was arrested nearby.

A Judge ordered a psychiatric assessment and Gladue report following Jones’ guilty pleas to the charges.

Those reports are anticipated to be completed in mid-April at which time a sentencing date for Jones is expected to be confirmed.

Jones is not in custody and has no prior criminal record in the province.
