Qualicum Beach re-examines expanding council

Jan 23, 2022 | 5:48 AM

QUALICUM BEACH — People in Qualicum Beach are being asked if they support having additional councillors passing local laws.

The Town is inviting public opinion on possibly increasing its size of Council by two people, touting better representation and broader perspectives to match a growing community.

The issue is scheduled to be discussed at a February 9 committee meeting.

There are currently four councillors and a mayor representing the Town of Qualicum Beach, whereas the overwhelming majority of similarly sized communities around the province have six councillors.

According to the Town, the October 2022 general election is being considered to pose a non-binding ballot question to gauge the public’s interest.

“Fom there, the newly elected Council could pass a bylaw to increase Council size, which would take effect at the next General Local Election in 2026,” the Town stated on its website.

Input from Qualicum Beach voters in the 2008 and 2014 civic elections showed strong disapproval of 24 per cent and 30 per cent respectively.

People can email the Town their opinions, or take part in a scheduled committee meeting conducted virtually on Feb. 9.
