NANAIMO — The Nanaimo Sport Achievement Awards are set to be an in-person event once again in 2022.

The awards were announced virtually in 2021 but the upcoming 17th annual ceremony will be held on February 25 at the Coast Bastion Hotel.

Organizer Marilyn Sullivan is pleased see the awards ceremony return to its usual live format. She also praised the perseverance of local athletes through the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I know that athletes have struggled over the past year and a half but they have stayed true with training and working hard at their sport.”

There are 17 different awards plus an additional two honours named after local sporting legends.

Those include male and female individual and team awards for junior all the way up to masters. Officials, partners, administrators and newsmakers will also be recognized.

The Michael Rhode Memorial Award is presented to an athlete, coach, volunteer or advocate who gives time, energy and commitment to sports and the community while the Steve Smith Memorial Award honours outstanding achievement and dedication to extreme sports.

The nomination period is open until. Dec. 31 with a fillable form available at nanaimosportachievementawards.ca.

“It is great for us to hear that people are excited about taking nominations again this year after our minimized process last year,” Sullivan said. “We have our fingers crossed that we will be able to proceed with the process this year.”

A panel of judges made up of media and other members of the sports community will determine finalists.

The winners based on performance and achievements in the 2021 calendar year.
