City, RDN garbage collection rescheduled due to winter weather

NANAIMO — Frosty conditions and slippery roads have forced some adjustments to mid-Island garbage collection.

The City of Nanaimo cancelled pickups on Wednesday, Dec. 29 and will do the same on Thursday, Dec. 30. Instead collections of the scheduled bins will take place between Saturday, Jan. 1 and Monday, Jan. 3.

Residents in the city are being asked to bring their carts to the curb by 7:30 a.m. each day and take them back in by 9 p.m. until collected.

Road conditions will dictate how efficient collections crews will be with compact snow still covering many residential streets after “an exceptional weather event”.

More information on the City’s collection is available on their website.

The Regional District of Nanaimo is taking similar steps.

Collections missed on Christmas Eve, as well as Tuesday, Dec. 28 and Wednesday will be made up beginning Sunday, Jan. 2.

Residents in the RDN are asked to have their respective carts on the roadside by 8 a.m. on their assigned day.

Like their City counterparts, road conditions in the wake of another forecasted dump of snow Wednesday night will determine whether any further scheduling changes are required.

“The RDN and our contractor will continue to monitor road conditions for the remainder of the week,” a service notice from the RDN read. “If collections scheduled for Thursday, December 30, and Friday, December 31 are cancelled or interrupted, we will post further Service Alerts accordingly.”

More information on the RDN’s collection schedule is available on their website.
