Multi-vehicle crash clogs Trans-Canada Hwy. and Cedar Rd.

NANAIMO — Northbound traffic on the Island Hwy. was affected for around an hour and a half after a three vehicle crash.

Emergency crews attended the intersection of the Trans Canada Hwy. and Cedar Rd. in Chase River around 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 1.

Three vehicles, two pick up trucks and one crossover SUV, were involved in the incident with traffic delays in the area, particularly to northbound traffic along the Trans Canada Hwy. and Island Hwy.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue confirmed to NanaimoNewsNOW five patients were tended to at the scene and taken to hospital, all with non-life threatening injuries.

Highway traffic from Victoria to Nanaimo was detoured onto the Nanaimo Parkway, while vehicles from Cedar Rd. were turned down the Island Hwy. during the closure.

Crews opened northbound traffic after 12:30 p.m.

A sizeable BC Hydro outage for around 2,600 customers in south Nanaimo and downtown occurred around the same time of the crash, but was not unrelated to this incident.

BC Hydro crews assigned to both outages reported a tree down across wires.
