Annual hospital Light The Trees campaign raising money for essential needs

NANAIMO — It’s been getting a little brighter at NRGH lately.

An annual fundraiser put on by the Hospital Foundation is collecting donations in exchange for extra lights on trees at Nanaimo hospital.

Janice Perrino, CEO of the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation, said the request from staff at the facility this year was to help fund essential needs.

“We’re helping to build a new hip and knee clinic, we’re buying new analyzers for the lab, we’re buying new patient monitors for all around the hospital and we’re helping to purchase a van that’s going to be used by public health to go to our high schools to help with the kids that aren’t getting some of their needs met.”

The goal is $1 million, a target which was reached last year during the fourth edition of the fundraiser.

Funds will also be used towards a new CT machine at the hospital, following up a similar purchase from 2016 to meet increasing demand.

Perrino said it’s been a rough year at Nanaimo hospital this year, along for most areas of the province and the annual light up campaign is a way to bring a little extra holiday cheer to those who need it.

“We try to light up some of the trees every week to make sure that people realize the more we raise, the more we light up the trees so by Dec. 24, we’re hoping all the trees will be lit up.”

Donations to the campaign can be made through the Hospital Foundation’s website.
