Overnight closures on Malahat Hwy. ended

Nov 18, 2021 | 10:35 AM

NANAIMO — Late night traffic on the Malahat Hwy. is resuming earlier than expected.

The province announced Thursday, Nov. 18 the scheduled five to six days of closures between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. would no longer be required.

A release said repairs have “progressed well and no further overnight closures are needed.”

The road is still under repair following extensive rainfall and subsequent flooding over the weekend and into Monday, Nov. 15.

Single lane alternating traffic, in 30 minute increments, will continue while work is underway with occasional short-term closures to accommodate fuel tankers and emergency services.

Provided the weather holds, crews are expecting to be able to reopen the road to two-way traffic on Monday, Nov. 22.

BC Ferries is scheduled to operate a sailing between Victoria’s Swartz Bay and Nanaimo’s Duke Point on Thursday, a bid to re-connect commercial traffic on the south Island with parts north.
