Abbotsford Canucks postpone games due to catastrophic flooding, state of emergency

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — The Abbotsford Canucks’ two games this week against the Bakersfield Condors have been postponed due to catastrophic flooding in and around the city.

The Canucks (4-4-3) and Condors (6-4-2) were set to play on Friday and Sunday, but the games have been rescheduled for Jan. 5 and 10 due to the ongoing local state of emergency.

Tickets for this weekend’s games can be used for the rescheduled dates.

The region was overwhelmed by serious weekend rainstorms that caused flooding and landslides, washing out roads, stranding drivers and residents.

Evacuation orders have been issued for about 1,000 properties in the area, including a number of large dairy and poultry farms and other agricultural operations, and the B.C. government has declared a state of emergency.

Rob Mullowney, chief operating officer of the Abbotsford Canucks, said safety is the club’s top priority and it will extend support wherever it is needed.

“Our thoughts go out to everyone impacted by the extreme flooding and emergency conditions in the past few days,” he said in a statement. “We live and work in this community and we are tremendously grateful for all of the front-line emergency personnel who have helped ensure the safety of everyone.”

The Vancouver Canucks announced Wednesday that proceeds from 50/50 raffles during the team’s next three games will go to flood relief efforts throughout B.C.

“The flooding has been catastrophic, and we want to do anything we can,” said Paolo Aquilini, president of the Canucks for Kids fund, said in a statement.” We invite Canucks fans across B.C. to join us in supporting to support those who need it the most.”
