Island Health continues COVID uptick to end week

NANAIMO — Island Health has seen its recent spike in COVID-19 cases continue.

The health authority posted another 87 new cases on Friday, Oct. 29, adding to the 90 confirmed a day prior. It represents a sizeable increase compared to recent averages.

Fifty-eight of the new cases were in the central Island region which has led recently high daily additions. South Island posted 15 while the north accounted for the other 14.

Active cases rose to 520, up 32 from the day prior. The Central Island again leads current infections with 324.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of daily COVID-19 results. For local case tallies, NanaimoNewsNOW reports verified data from Island Health.

The number of people receiving treatment in Island hospitals remained relatively stable with 58 admitted, including 26 receiving intensive care.

Provincially, another 584 cases were added which is consistent with the rolling seven day average of 574. Active cases rose marginally to 4,982.

B.C. hospitals have 436 patients in for COVID-19 complications, with 155 receiving critical care.

Nine people lost their lives to COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, including two from the Island Health region. A total of 2,156 people have died as a direct result of the pandemic, including 91 on the Island.
