NANAIMO β€” A contractor working on a water main project off Hammond Bay Rd. has sustained lower body injuries after a fall.

Emergency crews were initially called to a confined space rescue at Falcon Dr. and Kite Way around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 12 in the Stephenson Point neighbourhood.

Upon arrival, Nanaimo Fire Rescue assistant chief Stu Kenning said they discovered the injured worker had fallen in a wide hole and was wedged under the pipe.

β€œHe was working on a water pipe, looks like he slipped and some dirt (fell) onto his legs and he has some lower leg injuries.”

Kenning said he suspected the man had broken both his legs.

It was initially thought a rope rescue was needed to free the man, however Kenning said a stretcher and manpower got him out of the hole, roughly 15 feet wide by seven feet deep.

The man was taken to hospital by BC Ambulance Service personnel.
