NANAIMO — Central Vancouver Island has accounted for a bulk of newly acquired COVID-19 cases on Tuesday.

Island Health reported 76 new cases throughout the health authority including 42 on the central Island. Southern Vancouver Island, areas south of the Malahat, had 29 while the north reported just five.

Active cases rose by 23, thanks in large part to the additions on the central Island. The area has 235 reported COVID-19 cases with 299 in the south and 43 in the north.

Despite the increases on the central Island, Tuesday’s report from Island Health continued to fall in line with recent daily case totals and is slightly down from a week prior.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of daily COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

According to the BC Centre for Disease Control, 35 patients are being treated in hospital for COVID-19 including 15 receiving critical care.

Provincially, 652 new cases were confirmed by public health on Tuesday.

Active cases dropped slightly, to 5,992 with 316 people hospitalized including 141 in intensive care.

Another two fatalities were linked to the pandemic from the last 24 hours, marking 1,942 people who have lost their lives to COVID-19.
