‘It’s a great event:’ family friendly Minetown Day converges on Lantzville

LANTZVILLE — Recognizing its community roots and bringing people together in a family-friendly atmosphere is what Minetown Day is all about in the eyes of the mayor.

A pancake breakfast, children’s bike parade and activities at Huddlestone Park happen on Saturday, Sept 18., which mayor Mark Swain said continues an over four decade tradition of the community’s signature event.

He said Minetown day originally was more geared toward its coal mining past.

“However, over the years it has evolved into a family friendly event,” Swain said. “Everything from bouncy castles, bike parade, hay rides, to having various vendors at Huddlestone Park.”

Swain said a popular component of the event is children decorating their bikes as they peddle to Huddlestone Park as part of a parade.

“Some kids go all out and wear costumes too” Swain added.

He said the well received event is appreciated by a wide cross section of the community.

“We’ve put for $10,000 a year aside for this event, council has recognized it has high community value, it brings people together. What more can you ask for? It’s a great event.”
