NANAIMO — A former local minor hockey product is staying put for the next two years.

Dylan Coghlan has put pen to paper on a two-year extension with the Vegas Golden Knights. The team announced the deal on Wednesday, Sept. 15.

According to CapFriendly.com, which tracks and monitors player salaries and NHL salary caps, Coghlan will make an average of $762,500 per year over the two seasons.

The way the contract is structured, it’s likely Coghlan will remain with the Golden Knights through the season and not their minor league affiliate.

Coghlan, 23, debuted with Vegas in the 2020/21 season, suiting up in 29 regular season games. He scored his first goal on March 10 in Minnesota and ended up adding two more in the same game for a hat-trick.

In addition to the three goals, Coghlan recorded three assists for six points.

Coghlan spoke to NanaimoNewsNOW in February following his debut with the team. He said it was a dream come true, despite the fact COVID-19 restrictions prevented his parents from sharing the moment with him.

“It would have been pretty incredible to have my parents, my brother and grandpa here,” Coghlan said. “That’s probably what I missed most, but on the other side playing here and being in this league is a huge honour.”

Coghlan grew up in Port Hardy before moving down-Island to Campbell River then Nanaimo in order to pursue hockey.

He played in the Western Hockey League for the Tri-City Americans before two seasons with the Chicago Wolves on the American Hockey League.

The 6’2”, 190 pound defenceman first signed with the Vegas Golden Knights after an impressive showing at the team’s development camp prior to the 2017/18 season.
