Distracted driver causes two-vehicle wreck on Nanaimo’s Fifth Street

NANAIMO — A two-vehicle crash in Nanaimo’s university district temporarily trapped two motorists hit by a cross-over SUV.

Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said the incident on Monday, Sept. 13 at about 12:15 p.m. on Fifth St. at Hillcrest Ave. was a result of a distracted motorist failing to brake at the intersection’s stop sign.

“And then T-boned the pick up with a couple in their 60’s inside. The impact caused them to be trapped in their vehicle. Fire crews had to extricate them,” O’Brien said.

After they were freed the couple was sent to hospital with minor injuries, O’Brien said.

Their truck was pushed onto its side against a utility pole due to the force of the other vehicle.

The three people in the crossover SUV were assessed on scene, but O’Brien said they didn’t require medical attention.

He said the vehicle’s driver was ticketed for distracted driving.

It wasn’t immediately clear which direction the vehicles were travelling, while dash cam footage from the truck would be reviewed, O’Brien said.

The crash closed Fifth St. between Hillcrest Ave. and Lambert Ave. for about an hour and a half.
