Central Island active COVID-19 cases rise to again top 200

NANAIMO — The central Vancouver Island region is seeing an increase in COVID-19 cases which is outpacing other areas of the health authority.

Island Health reported 84 new cases on Friday, Sept. 10, an increase comfortably above recent averages of between 50 and 70. Forty of the new cases were in the central Island which also saw the largest bump in active cases.

The region spanning from below the Comox Valley to north of the Malahat now records 202 active COVID-19 cases, an increase of 22. Southern Vancouver Island has 181, with areas in the north accounting for the remaining 80.

According to the BC Centre for Disease Control, 19 people are hospitalized on Vancouver Island for COVID-19 including 13 receiving critical care.

The 84 new cases came from 1,382 tests in the health authority, representing a test-positive rate of just over six per cent.

Across B.C., 820 new cases were announced by the province.

Active cases sit at 5,850 including 281 people in hospital with 135 receiving intensive care.

An additional nine fatalities were linked to COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, including one from Island Health. To date, 1,856 people have died as a result of the pandemic including 54 from Island Health.

The number of cases from the past week continue to skew heavily towards unvaccinated people.

Data from public health showed nearly 70 per cent of cases between Sept. 2-8 were not vaccinated. Over 81 per cent of hospitalizations between Aug. 26 and Sept. 8 were also among those without vaccination.
