Island Health’s active COVID-19 cases continue to drop

NANAIMO — Following a substantial reduction in active cases over the weekend, Island Health is reporting fewer active patients once more.

A total of 429 active cases remain for the health authority, as of their update on Wednesday, Sept. 1, including 162 in the central Island region which is a drop of three from Tuesday.

Just under half of all active cases are in the south Island, with 203 currently under monitoring. The remaining 64 are in the north.

Island Health reported 51 new cases on Wednesday, including 25 from the central Island region. Fifteen were in the south and eleven in the north.

According to the BC Centre for Disease Control, 15 people are admitted to Island hospitals for COVID-19 including 12 receiving intensive care.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

Provincially, a further 785 cases were confirmed by public health with the number active cases dropping to 5,873.

Of the new cases, Fraser and Interior Health accounted for roughly 65 per cent of Wednesday’s additions.

The BC CDC lists 199 people in hospital with 112 of those receiving intensive care.

Two additional deaths linked to COVID-19 were also reported, including one within Island Health. It’s the 48th fatality for the health authority with 1,818 people losing their lives to COVID related ailments across B.C.
