NANAIMO — Despite another high increase in daily cases, the number of people actively diagnosed with Island Health remains nearly unchanged.

The health authority reported 65 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, Aug. 27 including 23 from the central Vancouver Island region.

Active cases increased by just one thanks to a drop in current infections on southern Vancouver Island.

185 active cases remain on the central Island, 79 to the north and 188 to the south.

According to the BC Centre for Disease Control, 12 people are hospitalized for COVID-19, with another 13 in intensive care.

Provincially, a further 867 new cases were confirmed by public health. It’s the highest daily increase since late April when B.C. was on the backside of the third wave.

Active cases stayed relatively stable however, increasing just 17 to 5,657. Of those active, 159 people are in hospital with a further 84 requiring intensive care.

Most of the new cases again stemmed from Interior Health, accounting for 350. Three additional fatalities linked to COVID-19 were also from B.C.’s interior.

The province continues to report on case counts through vaccination status, with those partially vaccinated or without any protection accounting for over 85 per cent of hospitalizations for the past two weeks.

Data from public health also shows the number of cases per 100,000 people to be substantially larger in unvaccinated people.

Between Aug. 19-25, 199 cases per 100,000 people stemmed from those without a single shot while just 25 came from the same number of people with a full course of immunization.

To date, 7.4 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered across B.C.
