Island Health continues COVID-19 case climb, 63 new

NANAIMO — An upward trend for the Island Health authority has continued Thursday.

Sixty-three new cases were confirmed by the health authority including 27 in the central Island region. The south Island recorded 26, while the north accounted for the other 10.

Active cases increased by 54, sitting at 451 as of Thursday, Aug. 26. It’s the highest number of active cases since mid-April.

The central Vancouver Island region, spanning the width of Vancouver Island from south of the Comox Valley to north of the Malahat, reports 182 active cases, with 194 in the south and 75 in the north.

According to the BC Centre for Disease Control, 24 people are in Vancouver Island hospitals, half receiving intensive care.

Across B.C., 724 new cases were announced by the provincial government and public health.

The number active rose to 5,640 including 149 people in hospital with a further 83 in intensive care.

A further two deaths linked to COVID-19 were reported, both in Interior Health. To date, 1,804 people have lost their lives to the pandemic.

According to the province, between Aug. 11-24, 82.4 per cent of cases and 86.4 per cent of hospitalizations were among people without full vaccination against COVID-19.
