NANAIMO — Local police are looking for leads in relation to what they label a “possible serious assault.”

Emergency services were called to the corner of Terminal Ave. and Wentworth St., near Comox Rd. just after midnight on July 20.

A 37-year-old man was found to have suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital where he has remained since.

“He was transported to a local hospital for what was initially believed to be for medical reasons only,” a release from Nanaimo RCMP read. “Subsequent investigation by medical personnel over the following weeks led police to determine that the man may have been the victim of an assault.”

Investigators have cast a wide net on gathering information.

RCMP believe the victim, who had only recently arrived in Nanaimo, was involved in an altercation between 11 p.m. on Monday, July 19 and 1 a.m. on Tuesday, July 20.

Police didn’t narrow down the location of the alleged altercation beyond saying it took place in downtown Nanaimo in an area bordered by Front St., Terminal Ave., Comox Rd. and Esplanade.

Anyone with information, or dash cam footage from the area around the time in question is asked to contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250 743 2345, quoting file number 2021-29170.

The man was found by emergency services near the intersection of Terminal Ave. and Wentworth St. (yellow mark), however the altercation police believe occurred prior is thought to have happened somewhere in the red area. (Google Maps)
