Nanaimo SPCA’s raises third most in B.C. during annual fundraiser

NANAIMO – Community spirit is helping the Nanaimo SPCA pay medical bills for animals in need.

The annual Lock-In For Love event, held virtually in 2021 due to the ongoing pandemic, raised $16, 410.

Executive director Leon Davis told NanaimoNewsNOW they usually average around $10,000.

“It’s awesome. With COVID we had such a struggle without in-person events and we missed engaging with our supporters. This still gave us an opportunity to come together and raise money a different way.”

In a normal year, up to 10 participants are placed in a kennel and fundraise to get out. The 2021 virtual event was run as a much more traditional online fundraiser.

Davis said the higher amount of money is important because while in-person visits to the SPCA are limited, animal visits are not.

He said the Nanaimo SPCA has been as busy as ever, some times even more so in recent months.

The $16,410 raised will cover medical bills for animals in need for at least a few months.
