NANAIMO — B.C.’s COVID-19 case counts continue to dwindle by the day.

The province reported 84 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, totals from the last two reporting periods. 49 new cases were found on July 1, a further 35 in the last 24 hours.

No new cases in the Island Health region were announced over the previous two days.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

Active cases across B.C. fell to 729, a drop of just under 100 from prior to Canada Day.

Of the active cases, 99 people are in hospital across the province including 30 receiving intensive care. The province also declared an outbreak of cases at Royal Inland Hospital in Interior Health.

Two fatalities linked to COVID-19 were also confirmed by the province, marking 1,756 deaths in B.C. since the onset of the pandemic in early 2020.

Over 5.12 million doses of vaccine have been administered to date with the province rapidly scheduling second doses. Approximately 30 per cent of all doses given were second shots.

Public health said 77.5 per cent of all people aged 12 and up who are eligible for vaccine have received at least their first dose while 32.9 per cent are fully vaccinated.
