Active COVID-19 cases in Island Health drop below 200, two new on central Island

NANAIMO — The decline of COVID-19 cases continues in Island Health.

There were 20 new cases confirmed on Wednesday, May 5 as active cases fell below 200 for the first time since March 18, dropping to 195.

The record high at the highest of the third wave in early April was 508.

Central Vancouver Island accounts for 74 of the currently active cases, a decline of five from the day before. Just two new cases came in the central Island on Wednesday.

A significantly lower number of COVID-19 cases were seen across B.C.

A joint statement from provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and health minister Adrian Dix confirmed 572 new cases, down from roughly 680 the two days before.

This is the lowest number of new cases confirmed since March 20 across the province as B.C.’s curve trends downward.

Currently 6,877 active cases of COVID-19 exist in B.C., with 481 people in hospital and 161 receiving intensive care.

The province recorded no new fatalities on Wednesday.
