NANAIMO — The number of active COVID-19 cases found in Island Health has increased slightly as the health authority and province come down from the dizzying heights of only one month ago.

Island Health data on Wednesday, April 28 showed 32 new cases, which is the highest number of new cases in roughly one week. There are currently 269 active cases, with 79 in the central Vancouver Island area.

This is the second day of rises in active cases found within central Vancouver Island.

Despite the slight rise, it’s still far down from where the health authority was at the end of March and early April, when active cases reached an Island record of 508.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

Provincial data confirmed 841 new cases of COVID-19, taking B.C.’s total number of cases to 127,889 since the start of the pandemic.

Active cases dropped by 80 to 8,009 with another 11,657 people under active daily monitoring by public health.

Public health is continuing to maintain a pace of around 35,000 doses of vaccine being administered daily through clinics or select pharmacies.

A total of 34,281 doses were given in the last 24 hours, with all but 268 being first doses.

The province also confirmed five additional deaths linked to COVID-19.

People age 30 and older may now receive Oxford-AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine in B-C, starting with clinics set up in hot-spot communities.

“As we receive enough AstraZeneca to add appointments at pharmacies, it will be made available to anyone in the province aged 30 and older,” the province said in a release.

Earlier on Wednesday, Island Health declared an outbreak was over at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

Six patients and one staff member in the high intensity rehab unit had previously tested positive for COVID-19. The outbreak was declared on April 14 and was the third one for the hospital since the pandemic began.
