Improved access to designated parking for Nanaimo motorcycle riders with disabilities

NANAIMO — A partnership is answering calls from local motorcycle riders with a range of physical and mental disabilities.

The Nanaimo Disability Resource Centre (NDRC) has partnered with the Social Planning and Research Council of BC to provide handicap parking decals for motorcyclists. It builds off a program created by the Council in 2016, in conjunction with the Ministry of Transportation.

Barbara Biss, a volunteer with NDRC told NanaimoNewsNOW, having a disability doesn’t preclude you from getting on two wheels.

“Having a disability doesn’t mean that you’re in a wheelchair, there’s lots of unnoticeable disabilities out there and there are quite a few people who have motorcycles.”

The decals must be placed on either the front windshield or bumper of the motorcycle and are available for free to people with a valid, permanent parking decal for their vehicle.

They act in the same manner as decals stuck on cars or hung from the rear view mirror.

“We give our permits for people who are going through cancer treatment, people having hip replacements…it’s physical and mental disabilities,” Biss said.

The NRDC has given out around 30 decals so far and have another 50 on hand, but can give out as many as it needed over time.
