NANAIMO — The well used Fishing and Walking Pier on Nanaimo’s waterfront is getting a deep clean.

The public amenity will be power washed and checked for it’s structural integrity, which will see the pier closed all day Thursday, April 15, according to the Port of Nanaimo.

Vice president of asset management Emil Tomesceu said the Port has adopted a more thorough examination of all their assets in recent years.

“Managing structural integrity is important for all of our assets, but also we want to maintain the appeal of such a desired and well used pier.”

He noted the pier was last power washed in 2019.

The floating pier’s chains and concrete anchors will also be inspected, Tomesceu said.

Port of Nanaimo chief operating officer Mike Davidson said the over 400 foot long pier has been a highly valued waterfront institution since it was installed at Swy-A-Lana Lagoon in the early 1990’s.

“It’s very well used by the community. People travel from Parksville just to use it,” Davidson said.

The gated pier is closed during non daylight hours and poor weather, Davidson noted.
