Crew plucks passenger from chilly Salish Sea after falling off Nanaimo-Vancouver ferry

NANAIMO — A ferry crossing between Vancouver and Nanaimo turned into a late night sea rescue.

BC Ferries crews were alerted to a possible person overboard on the Thursday, April 1, 8:45 p.m. sailing from Departure Bay to Horseshoe Bay.

Crews aboard the Queen of Surrey deployed rescue equipment and successfully rescued the man.

“Our crews are highly trained to respond in the event of a marine emergency, and we thank them for their quick actions. We certainly hope the person is OK, and we wish them well.

The Queen of Surrey returned to Departure Bay at approximately 10:20 p.m. to unload passenger into an awaiting ambulance. It then resumed its sailing to Horseshoe Bay.

“We thank our customers for their patience and understanding as we handled the situation.”

At approximately 10 p.m. passengers on Queen of Oak Bay were alerted their arrival in Nanaimo would be delayed docking at the terminal.
