NANAIMO — Several residents of a Nanaimo long term care home tested positive for COVID-19.

Five residents at Longlake Chateau independent living facility contracted the virus, according to Island Health in a statement on Thursday, March 25.

The facility on Long Lake is operated by Atria Retirement Canada.

“The residents who tested positive and close contacts are self-isolating in their homes,” the health authority said in a release.

Admissions are now restricted and only essential visitors are allowed in. COVID-19 testing will be done for all staff and residents.

It’s the first facility within Island Health to sustain an outbreak since late February, when a staff member at Glacier View Lodge in Courtenay tested positive.

Island Health confirmed 39 new cases of COVID-19 earlier in the day, with 233 active across the health authority.
