Fatal construction site accident on Gabriola Island under investigation

NANAIMO β€” The BC Coroners Service is investigating after two men were killed in a workplace incident on Gabriola Island.

Emergency crews were called to a residential property on Berry Point Rd. near Twin Beaches Mall around 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday, March 16.

RCMP stated in a news release a boom of a concrete pump-truck broke off and landed on the two workers at the property.

Both men were pronounced deceased on scene.

Several ground ambulances from Gabriola were dispatched, along with critical care paramedics from Nanaimo.

Air ambulance helicopters also responded to the scene, however no patients were transported from the scene.

The BC Coroners Service, WorkSafeBC and the Gabriola Island RCMP detachment are all investigating.

β€œThe investigation is ongoing, however police do not believe there to be anything suspicious in this tragedy,” the RCMP statement said.
