Tire flies off car after lug nuts tampered with

NANAIMO — Drivers are urged to check the lug nuts of their tires before driving.

Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said there are two reported incidents of lug nuts being loosened at cars parked in the Serauxmen baseball stadium on Wednesday, March 10.

The lug nuts on a 2008 Dodge Caliber were loosened enough the tire actually came off.

O’Brien said the driver noticed a strong vibration from his back passenger side tire after a few minutes of driving. The tire popped off just as they pulled off Bowen Rd. near Bowen Park and rolled down to the tennis courts.

“If that had hit a child or somebody, it could have been devastating.”

The driver then told others who’d parked at the stadium. Sure enough the lug nuts on a large truck were loose.

“We’re thinking it might have been a stupid act gone sideways by another student or something more malicious,” O’Brien said. There’s no suspects at the moment.

O’Brien said there were one-off incidents reported over the years, but never to the extent of a tire actually coming off.

Anyone else parked at the stadium or near NDSS who finds their lug nuts loosened are urged to call Nanaimo RCMP.
