South Island sees majority of new COVID-19 infections

NANAIMO — British Columbia has recorded one of its highest daily increases for 2021.

The province and public health confirmed 648 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, March 12.

Island Health reported 33 new cases on Friday, a majority of which were in the south Island region.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

The number of active cases increased to 229, however went down in the central Island region to 109. The south Island has 78 active cases, an increase of 13, while the north Island reported no change with 42 active.

Active cases across the province increased by over 100 to 5,070, the first time since Jan. 12 cases had crested 5,000.

Hospitalizations in B.C. also increased to 255 including 67 people receiving intensive care.

A further 79 variants of concern were confirmed Friday, taking the total detected to 717 with just 99 are active.

Mass vaccination clinics officially open on Monday for non-Indigenous peoples aged 90 and over, along with First Nations elders 65 and older.

To date, 380,743 doses of COVID-19 vaccine were administered including 87,024 second doses.

The province also recently opened up immunization appointments for the next age cohort of people born in or before 1936.
