First new hotel in more than a decade opens in Nanaimo

NANAIMO — A new hotel stands out amid the older-style homes and empty lot just west of downtown Nanaimo.

The 45-room Quality Inn hotel at 440 Selby St. between Franklyn and Albert St. is now open.

According to City of Nanaimo staff, it’s the first hotel to open in Nanaimo since 2008.

The Quality Inn is welcoming guests roughly three-and-a-half years after a development permit was first granted and construction was underway during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The hotel was granted a 10-year tax exemption back in 2018, on the condition the doors were open by the end of 2019. Though the deadline was missed, the exemption was still granted by the City.

The Quality Inn hotel is one of three hotels currently being developed in Nanaimo, alongside the under construction Gordon St. hotel and the stalled Front. St. hotel.
