Canadian Snowbirds jet into Comox for training ahead of annual air show

NANAIMO — The skies of the Comox Valley are alive with the sounds of jets this week, as the Canadian Forces Snowbirds are back in town.

Their annual spring training at CFB Comox builds to their first public appearance of the season at the Comox Air Show on May 18, at 19 Wing Comox.

Public affairs officer Cpt. Philip Rochon said this year is a special one as they celebrate 100 years of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF).

“We’re super happy to be back. This is really our second home. We come back here every year for spring training, so for us it’s been a productive year in Moose Jaw since the end of our season last year, so we’re super excited to be here and move forward in our training to develop the best show we can.”

The eight snowbird jets are conducting at least two practice runs a day over the Comox Valley six days a week, depending on the weather, only taking Sunday off if they can.

Flights are normally taken in the morning and afternoon, with a third practice flight possibly taking place near the end of the day.

Rochon said they’ll practice their routines for the next few weeks, maneuvering the jets closer and closer together during their air formations to have it done prior to the show.

“The big thing that we’re doing this year is we’re going a number of shows across Canada at military bases at Royal Canadian Airforce wings across the country. It’s really not only to show Canadians what we do as an Air Force, but it’s also to recognize our fellow members of the RCAF that really highlight the skill, professionalism, and teamwork that all of us in the CAF and the RCAF thrive to do every day.”

A few new pilots join their ranks this season, including two B.C. natives.

“They’re excited to be in their home province to show off what they can do, and for sure they’ll be out there meeting the crowds at the Comox airshow. Come the 18, it’s the best show we can put on for residents of the Comox Valley.”

If you’re unable to attend the air show on May 18, there are a few ways to get a view of the action.

Those with the appropriate credentials can view the performance from Air Force Beach at the north end of Comox Valley Airport.

However, more casual viewers are directed to Point Holmes just south of the airport.
