NANAIMO — A 21-year-old local man is dead following an ATV crash in the backcountry west of the city.

Police said the man was riding a motorcycle on Road 142 near Boomerang Lake around 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 7.

Cst. Gary O’Brien said the man and his friend, riding a separate motorbike, were heading back towards the city when they collided with another rider on a side-by-side ATV.

“Very remote area, EHS could not get in by their vehicle so air ambulance had to arrive. The victim was transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased upon arrival.”

The air ambulance was able to land around a kilometre from the site just before 4 p.m.

The rider of the side-by-side, who was travelling in a group of three, was not injured.

Both vehicles were seized for a mechanical inspection while the BC Coroners Service conducts an investigation into the incident.

“We’re looking at the location, the roads were a little slippery and it was overcast, we’re looking at the speed of the vehicles and if there was any alcohol consumption,” O’Brien said.

Police are asking the public who have any information on behaviour of the riders before the crash to contact the detachment at 250-754-2345 and quote file number 2021-8241.
