Signature Dish: Bold Knight’s classic steak and lobster

NANAIMO — When going out for a nice meal, the Bold Knight restaurant is always one of the top recommendations.

The classic surf and turf meal of an 8 oz. sirloin and 4 oz. Canadian lobster tail has been on the menu since the restaurant opened more than 40 years ago.

“They’re two quality items. You can’t beat a nice sirloin steak,” Josh Vassilopoulos, owner of the Bold Knight, said. “If you’re going out for a special night, most people think of steak and lobster. Our name usually gets brought up because we’ve been doing it for 44 years.”

The delicious steak and lobster served with a side salad hasn’t changed much since the first plate was delivered to a table in 1977. The hefty steak falls apart easily under the knife after giving a brief challenge while the lobster tantalizes under a thin coating of butter.

Each is so delicious your best bet is to have a bite of steak before some lobster and then back to the steak. It’s an impossible meal to not eat quickly since it’s so good.

“When my dad started in 1977 he wanted a steak and seafood restaurant,” Vassilopoulos explained. “We keep on doing what we know we do well.”

The steaks never change but the lobster presentation does.

For the Bold Knight’s 44th anniversary special, Vassilopoulos put together a jalapeno lobster appetizer to accentuate the lobster flavour in a different but not overwhelmingly spicy way.

“We’ve never tried it before, it’s something new, we always try to have some sort of special lobster dish. What’s better than bacon wrapped around a jalapeno with lobster?”

The jalapenos crunch satisfyingly with every bite. Despite the cream cheese filling, the meal holds together well thanks to the tightly wrapped bacon, so you don’t have to worry about spilling and making a mess on your nice outfit worn for a night on the town at the Bold Knight.

Reservations at the Bold Knight have been hot commodities ever since it opened.

Vassilopoulos said he recognizes customers from all walks of life and ages.

“We’re seeing generations. After 44 years we’re seeing kids that used to come here with their parents when they were under 10-years-old. Now they’re 20, 30-years-old still coming in.”

The Bold Knight opens for dinner at 4 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday for an ideal dinner for any occasion at it’s Island Hwy. south location.

The full 44th anniversary lobster fest menu can be found online, featuring the bacon wrapped lobster jalapeno poppers and much more.
