Island Health records highest weekend COVID-19 case increase, 101 new

NANAIMO — Gains made by Island Health in lowering COVID-19 case counts through February was undone over the weekend.

A record 101 new cases were confirmed by the health authority on Monday, Feb. 22 from the past three days. It is a steep jump over the previous weekend record high of 86 announced on Feb. 8.

The number of active cases in the Island Health region ballooned back to 213, an increase of 54. The central Vancouver Island region continues to account for a majority of active cases, with 113 or 62 per cent.

To date, 2,157 total cases were confirmed by the health authority including 1,238 in the central Island region throughout the pandemic.

Across B.C., 1,428 new cases were recorded by the BC Centre for Disease Control from the three reporting periods.

A total of 4,560 active cases remain in the province, an increase of 74 from Friday, Feb. 19.

Eight fatalities across B.C. were also confirmed.

The number of people in B.C. hospitals remained relatively steady with 223 people receiving care, including 66 in ICU. Sixteen people remain in hospital within Island Health according to the BC CDC, including six in intensive care.

British Columbia’s vaccination program has administered 218,726 doses of either Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.
