NANAIMO — The number of COVID-19 cases in School District 68 continues to swell.

John Barsby secondary school confirmed an additional case over the weekend with a potential exposure event at the school on Jan. 29.

The exposure at John Barsby is the same date as another case announced on Feb. 2.

Bayview elementary, also already on Island Health’s school exposure list, confirmed a new case with an exposure event at the school on Jan. 26.

Six Nanaimo schools are listed on Island Health’s school exposure list, including five in SD68.

NDSS, John Barsby secondary plus Rock City, Bayview and Brechin elementary schools all had confirmed cases announced in the first week of February, stemming from exposure events in late January and early February.

Qwam Qwum Stuwixwulh in Snuneymuxw First Nation has at least five cases after a round of testing was completed on Thursday, Feb. 4.

Three schools in the region, Qwam Qwum Stuwixwulh, Rock City and Bayview elementary schools are listed as clusters.

Island Health defines a cluster as “two or more confirmed cases within a 14-day period, with evidence of transmission occurring within the school.”

A full list of COVID-19 school exposures within Island Health is available here.

Announcements of new cases made after business hours by SD68 are typically added by Island Health the following morning.
