NANAIMO — Two Nanaimo schools have added more COVID-19 cases.

Nanaimo-Ladysmith School District confirmed a series of exposure events at NDSS for Jan. 27, 28 and Feb. 1 and 2.

This builds on the previous exposure date for Jan. 28, which was announced among four other area schools on Thursday, Feb. 4. Island Health is currently contact tracing the exposure at NDSS.

Snuneymuxw First Nation also confirmed five new cases linked to Qwam Qwum Stuwixwulh school, which had previously reported an exposure event on Jan. 28.

A release from SFN said 46 people at the school were tested through a mobile clinic, yielding the five positive results.

“Identifying these cases at this early stage is a good thingand exactly the strategy associated with swift and expedited mobile testing following a significant exposure at QQS last week,” a statement from SFN read.

Further testing of Qwam Qwum Stuwixwulh students will occur at the end of next week.

There are currently six schools within Nanaimo on Island Health’s school exposure list.

NDSS and John Barsby Secondary are the only senior schools on the list with the remainder being elementary schools.

The southend high school also experienced COVID-19 events in the first round of school exposures in November when the COVID-19 pandemic resurged in Nanaimo.
