B.C.’s COVID-19 curve continues slow, downward trend

NANAIMO — B.C. continues to drop from the COVID-19 high of the fall.

The province announced 471 new cases throughout B.C. on Feb. 5, 2021. This is in line with the number of cases announced throughout the week as B.C.’s epidemiological curve trends slowly downward.

It’s a significant fall from nearly 1,000 confirmed in one day during the resurging pandemic in November.

There’s currently 4,423 active cases with a further 6,886 people under active public health monitoring. Of the 253 people in hospital, 70 are receiving intensive care.

Both the number of people in hospital and in the ICU dropped from the day before.

Earlier in the day, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said despite the downturn, she wasn’t ready to rescind restrictions on social gatherings.

Island Health confirmed 28 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, the same as the day before. The central Vancouver Island area once again bearing the brunt of new cases, with 20 new. The number of active cases in the area did drop by three to 165 out of the 236 currently active cases throughout the health authority.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

A spike in the Alberni-Clayoquot region in the last week is dwarfed by continuing high case counts in South Cowichan and Greater Nanaimo. (Island Health)

Island Health has remained the least affected health authority in B.C.

Dr. Henry’s testing data revealed on Friday showed the health authority testing at the same levels of the Interior and Northern health authorities with significantly less positive tests.
