NANAIMO — A serious, multi-vehicle crash shut down the Duke Point Hwy. Tuesday morning.

Nanaimo RCMP said a van travelling westbound on Duke Point Hwy. crossed the centre line and collided with a semi-truck travelling east.

Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW the semi left the road after the collision.

“The passenger in the van was ejected from the vehicle and seriously injured. Immediately after that collision, another westbound pickup collided with the van.”

The driver of the pickup was tended to at the scene and taken to hospital in Victoria by air ambulance. The driver of the semi-truck and the woman ejected suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospital in Nanaimo. The driver of the van sustained only minor injuries.

Motorists can still get to to and from the ferry terminal via Cedar Rd. Drive BC expects the road to re-open at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday evening.

“Diesel spilled onto the highway and our traffic analysts have been on scene and will be there for most of the day,” O’Brien said.

The RCMP are asking if anyone has further information on the crash, or dash cam footage from the scene, to contact them if they did not speak to an officer on scene.

“Roads were wet, it was dark at the time but it wasn’t raining. [Road conditions] are one factor we’ll look at, we’ll also look at the mechanical inspection on all of the vehicles and the state of the drivers.
