NANAIMO — Island Health recorded its lowest number of cases in a single reporting period in the last week.

Seventeen new cases were confirmed by the health authority on Tuesday, Jan. 12 taking the total number of cases reported throughout the pandemic to 1,154.

The past seven days featured daily increases primarily in the 20’s with a seven day average of 23.

The number of active cases dropped by one from Monday’s update, now 185 with 120 in the central Island region. South Vancouver Island reported 35 active cases with 30 in the northern portion.

Province-wide, 446 new cases were added to B.C.’s total with the number of active cases dropping to 5,045.

Of the active cases, 368 people are in hospital for their symptoms including 72 people receiving intensive care. Island Health reports 12 hospitalizations including one in intensive care.

Public health also reported nine new fatalities as a result of COVID-19. To date, 1,019 people have lost their lives as a result of the virus including 13 within Island Health.

Of note: Data released from the province confirmed just 14 new cases for the Island Health region.

Island Health confirmed to NanaimoNewsNOW the data discrepancy is a result of the new reporting system implemented by the province early in January.

NanaimoNewsNOW will continue to report numbers published by Island Health for the local health authority, not the BC Centre for Disease Control.
