COVID-19 outbreak at Nanaimo care home continues to expand

NANAIMO – The number of residents at a Nanaimo care home with COVID-19 has more than doubled.

Island Health announcing an additional three additional cases of COVID-19 at the Chartwell Malaspina Care Residence long-term care home on Tuesday, Dec. 29.

“The new cases were detected through mass-testing performed on Dec. 28. Communication with residents, families and staff is underway.”

The first two cases were discovered over the Christmas long weekend.

All five residents are within the same unit on the first floor of the care home.

The unit is isolated from the rest of the facility.

Island Health has yet to confirm how COVID-19 entered the care home.

“Beginning immediately, all residents and staff who have worked at the site will be tested for COVID-19.”

Island Health managed to avoid fatalities over the Christmas holiday, while 74 people died throughout B.C.
